NCAA News

Two items of NCAA news, both posted by Girls Basketball News & Recruiting Information. The first is that the NCAA is making a change to the Women's Tournament starting in 2009. They are moving to a "16 site, four team format" for the first two rounds. The current link on the blog is broken - here's one that works (at least for now).

The second item is that the NCAA is considering lowering the number of scholarships for Division 1 from 15 to 13, with the additional ones to be used for other women's sports. (Scroll to the bottom of the article - most of it is about 1-AA Football playoffs).

My guess is that if that change does come to pass, it will have little impact. Many schools (especially smaller schools) already don't use their full allotment of scholarships. (I can't recall the last time, if ever, that Michigan had 15 scholarship players on the roster - they currently have 14). It might help competitiveness a bit as the top programs won't be able to stockpile quite so many players.
