Purdue gets probation

From Purdue's Student Newspaper:

Purdue University has been put on two years probation for minor and major violations made by the women’s basketball program, the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions announed today.

In addition to probation, the NCAA declared that the women’s basketball team will lose two scholarships and that former assistant coach Katrina Merriweather will face a three-year show-cause penalty.

In February 2006, Purdue officials suspended guard Cherelle George and Merriweather for possible NCAA violations. Almost two months later, George was declared permanently ineligible and Merriweather resigned. An internal investigation by Purdue found six possible violations.

Article in the Michigan Daily

The Michigan Daily has an article about the new men's and women's basketball coaches at Michigan. A nice quote from Carly Benson:
"My decision to (turn down Wisconsin-Green Bay to) go to Michigan had nothing to do with coach Borseth," Benson said. "He was the whole reason I originally wanted to go to Green Bay. Now I feel like I have the best of both worlds with him here as the coach."

Big Ten Coaches

Ok, its the off season, and things are slow. From Women's Hoops Blog, a synopsis of a article in the premium section of scout.com:
In the pay-for-it section of Full Court, Sharon reflects on the new crop of Big Ten coaches. Her predictions: success at Penn State and Illinois, a good choice with some question marks at Michigan, and a serious disappointment for the only-recently-really-good Spartans. (But how can Kevin Borseth be "a jerk" if his players "love him"?)
Not having read the original article, I have no idea why Coach Borseth was labeled a jerk, nor why Suzy Merchant would be considered a disappointment (at least at this point).

Badgers head down under

The University of Wisconsin Women's Basketball team is heading to Australia and New Zealand for a four game tour. (Hat tip to Girls Basketball Recruiting Blog.) It should be a great experience for the players, and the extra practices (and games) should help the team.

Maybe Coach Borseth will be able to arrange a foreign tour for the Wolverines one of these upcoming summers.
